Scaling Online Classes for 20,000+ Students with Jitsi Multi-Cluster Architecture for Turkey University

The Challenge

Turkey University aimed to significantly expand its online education capabilities to support over 20,000 students simultaneously. However, their existing infrastructure was not equipped to handle such a large-scale digital transformation. They required a scalable and reliable system that could ensure high-quality, uninterrupted virtual classrooms while maintaining a seamless and interactive learning experience.

Our Approach

To address this challenge, we implemented a robust Jitsi-based solution designed specifically for large-scale online education. We deployed Jitsi on-premise using a multi-cluster architecture, enabling efficient load distribution and ensuring system resilience even during peak usage. This approach minimized the risk of overload and provided consistent performance for thousands of concurrent users.

To support lecture recording at scale, we implemented Jibri scaling, ensuring that all sessions could be recorded without affecting live performance. This allowed students to revisit lectures at their convenience, making the system more flexible and accessible.

We also integrated Jitsi seamlessly with the university’s Moodle-based Learning Management System (LMS). This integration created a unified platform where students could access live classes, recorded sessions, and course materials in one place, enhancing usability and simplifying the learning process.

  • On-premise Jitsi deployment with multi-cluster scaling
  • High concurrency support for 20,000+ students
  • Jibri scaling for reliable lecture recording
  • Seamless integration with Moodle-based LMS
  • Optimized performance and system resilience

The Result

The solution enabled Turkey University to successfully scale its online classes to accommodate over 20,000 students simultaneously. The system delivered a stable, efficient, and interactive learning environment, ensuring uninterrupted education at scale. Students and faculty benefited from a seamless experience, while the university achieved its goal of expanding digital learning capabilities.

Looking Forward

This project highlights the impact of scalable and innovative technology in modern education. By leveraging Jitsi and focusing on performance and integration, Turkey University is now well-positioned to continue growing its online education initiatives. We remain committed to supporting institutions in building future-ready digital learning ecosystems.
